Tulips EMERGED

Date: 02/24/2003

Number: 1

This morning at 10:00 am we went out to visit our tulip garden. In the old tulip beds were tulips that had come up earlier, about 10 days ago. In our new tulip bed that was exactly 7 inches deep, we had a cluster of tulips that had been up for 2-3 days, but most of the bulbs were just emerging from the ground. Students examined the plot closely. Our winter has been mild, with hardly any snow on the valley floor. The snow we did have, stayed up higher on the hills and in the mountains. We have had good rains to help add moisture to the ground. What weather we did have would be cold, followed by unseasonally warm weather, then cold, and then warm weather again. The tulips this year have emerged 2 to 3 weeks earlier that previous seasons. In 1998, tulips emerged on 3/9/98, then 3/22/99, 3/11/00/ and 3/12 in 2001.
