Dawn is 0630 now, so I can count robins for the last nine kilometers of my walk. I counted seventy-eight robins, ten singing and the remainder calling. They were all territorial although there are still flocks elsewhere on Salt Spring island. Songsparrows have been singing and constructing nests since late January. Some of the other birds proclaiming include Spotted towhee, Winter and Bewick's wren, Bald eagle, Brown creeper. Some of the wintering waterfowl are displaying and will be leaving to go north and east soon.Brant cormorant and California sealions will be going south. Varied thrush will be moving west to the mountains of Vancouver Island. Resident flocks of Red-winged blackbirds are starting to disperse to local marshes.Spring is definitely here.
