We are awaiting the first northbound monarchs returning from Mexico this next week. Last year first on March 12, then three on the 15th - very faded, stroking hard NNE in Victoria (thirty miles WNW of Lavaca Bay). There is a good crop of native, wild milkweeds awaiting the returning monarchs now, Asclepias oenotheroides - Calhoun County, A. viridis (only fair crop so far) - Calhoun and Victoria Counties, A. asperula and A. viridiflora - DeWitt County (the three adjacent counties stretching from the bay 75 miles WNW across southcentral Texas). Observed five overwintering monarchs at Port O'Connor yesterday (15 miles nearer the Gulf), two up close, one very faded, other moderately faded. Still many Robins, many warblers, 20+ in backyard today.
