Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/15/2003

Number: 1

We had a mature, male Ruby-throated Hummingbird visiting the backyard today. All week I have been trying to photograph a Rufous Hummingbird that stayed around this winter, so to suddenly see a hummer display a deep red throat (instead of the orange) from across the yard was a surprise and a treat. Both the Rufous and the Ruby-throated visited (never at the same time!) all the blooming plants in the backyard ... favorite seemed to be blooms on the waist high spires of scarlet salvia. Storms that developed in northeastern Mexico moved to the Texas midcoast and have dumped a great deal of rain in locations around us, backyard was "birdy" all day.
