Robin (OTHER Observations)

Date: 01/04/2003

Number: 1

Robins still remain on the ground since January. Because of snowy-subfreezing weather northward and abundant berry supplies here, we had an uncommon influx of winter robins. Our freeze-thaw weather fermented the berries, so robins & cedar waxwings got drunk. They were hit by cars, flew into windows & died of alcohol posoning and thus hadn't eaten enough food to beep their body temperatures up overnight. This is part of an article in our local Audubon newsletter. Written by Fred Gehlbach - biologist, taught at Baylor University for 32 years.
