Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/18/2003

Number: 1

Eleven eggs counted on young A. currisavica being grown in pots located outdoors. The female laying the eggs was caught, tagged, and released. Within minutes she returned to the milkweed and continued to lay eggs, so I should find more eggs on my next count.

The wings of the monarch were faded and well-worn, but otherwise she was in fairly good shape. She might have been the first from the Mexican colonies to arrive in this area--or she might have flown here from southern Florida. I don't think she was a monarch that overwintered on the Gulf coast near here (as they sometimes do), because a couple of relatively severe cold spells in January resulted in their disappearance from the area.
