Tulips EMERGED

Our garden was planted in the middle of an open field about two feet away from a chain link fence. During the winter many leaves blew in against the fence. The leaves have been buried under snow for most of the winter. The snow just melted at the end of last week.
Today we raked away the leaves and found that about one quarter of the tulips have emerged. These were all located at one end of the garden.
We have kept track of the soil temperature since planting. It stayed at 30 degrees F from the 20th of January until March 13th. In just the last six days the soil temperature has gone up to 42 degrees.
Some of us planted experimental gardens at home. Tulips in four of those gardens have emerged so far. A fifth student's bulbs were eaten by a squirrel shortly after planting in the fall.
