Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/20/2003

Number: 1

I see from the reports that Meridian,MS, 50 miles northeast has already reported a sighting.

This afternoon, around 5:30 p.m., one hungry hummer nectaring on a large white flowering quince, which is interesting, since for the last 4 or 5 years the quince has bloomed in early January and been finished by now. I didn't get up close, but could see he/she was very busy and I feel sure he'll be there tomorrow, as we have so much in bloom, including three giant pear trees, flowering peaches, blueberries, apples, Carolina jessamine, Burford holly, and a Japanese cherry.

I guess I'll have to get some feeders ready anyway, as they usually come calling for them as soon as they arrive.

Glorious day except for the dust storms of pine pollen.
