Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/23/2003

Number: 1

While checking Asclepias viridis patch for eggs (east of Victoria proper) a seventh grader that had joined me (mom and little brother too) found hatchling monarch larvae. Many, many eggs over the three acre patch. Two faded monarch females came by as we were visiting 'their' milkweed patch. Monarch eggs should be hatching on Asclepias asperula in northwestern DeWitt County. Many eggs there, watched two very faded monarch females there an hour earlier depositing eggs. These should be monarchs from Mexico and not from winter crop along the coast. What the fire ants let grow to maturity should be "generation two" heading north in about thirty days.
