We observed Monarchs in the butterfly garden at school about 3 weeks ago. Our milkweed was not quite bloomiing nor did it have many leaves. The butterflies were laying eggs on the few leaves that made it through the winter.
I bought more milk weed plants (they were very hard to find in the stores, not many available) and put them in the garden.
We rescued the caterpillars form the hands of curious children(as we do every year) and put the caterpillars in cages with milk weed plants. They have crysalized and we have released a
butterfly nearly every day for the past 2 and1/2 weeks.
It always creates much interest as the butterflies stay in the
garden lay more eggs.
It is hard to keep up with them.
