All Other Signs of Spring

We have House finches here. The first for the year was yesterday. Another today. If you look at a birding atlas you'll note that House finches aren't found here in southern Alberta. Those maps are wrong about a lot of things ... that being one. House finches have been found here for a number of
years now and they're back again this year.

Black-neck stilts are another species bird maps don't include for our area but during the summer I see them at Stirling Lake every day. They're in the company of the American avocet. I don't know if they breed here or not. I haven't seen any young at any time but I do see adults all summer long and have for years. As for seeing young, it's quite possible they do raise
young here but in an area which is hard to get to on foot which is more than possible. Anyway, there aren't any stilts around yet. Just tundra swans, various duck species, the usual migrants for this time of year. (A Northern Observation Post)
