Lakes Maria and Emily had very limited open water, with a few very small open spots in the middle of each lake - each had a Common Loon in one of the very small openings. These openings were obviously too small for the loon to take off, so they were very actively swimming and diving. It appeared they were trying to keep those small areas open.
