My family has a hundred year old apple orchard on The Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. We have about 30,000 people visit our orchard every season, late May through October. The orchard supports a number of preservation projects, including one for monarch butterflies. We have a butterfly garden, and a monarch rearing station inside our packing house. We show our project to school groups, seniors groups, and any one visiting The Orchard. Every fall we have a monarch tagging demonstration at The Orchard, where visitors help us tag and release monarchs. The purpose of this project is to encourage visitors to raise and promote monarchs in their towns. We've been very successful in exciting folks about being a part of the monarch preservation effort. On our website, www.altapassorchard.com we include detailed instructions about raising monarchs.
