Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/17/2003

Number: 1

First sighting at 7:30 AM on 4/17/03.
This is an older male who returned this year.
He knew the perches I put up years ago and places
he had chosen in past years. The feeder had been up
since 4/01 hoping for an early return like last year.
House Wrens have yet to return and no Warblers
passed through this year. I had Yellow Rumped and
Black and White Warblers during winter 2002 but
not this year. Quince and some Azaleas along with
fruit trees are in bloom.
Strange the hummers skirted this area and were logged in Ohio weeks ago. They seemed to follow the mountain range rather than the coast and piedmont.
Weather patterns were not conducive to the migration
and there were few southerly winds.
I am just glad to see an old friend back safely.
