My fourth graders had planted milkweed in the fall and were excited in March to see it sprouting. It had gotten about a foot and a half tall when we were out for Easter holidays. Last Wed. another class spotted 2 Monarchs sitting on one of our milkweed plants. Today we went out to check for eggs and were supprised to see most of our plants were eaten down! When we looked closer, the plants were covered with tiny Monarch caterpillars. There are around 30 of them, with more eggs to hatch. We only have about 10 plants, so we are scrambing to find more milkweed in the area. We located 30 more small plants at a nursery this afternoon, so we will plant them tomorrow. My students are so excited and can't wait to begin measuring and videoing our caterpillars. We begin standardized testing tomorrow, so we will have something fun to relax us in the afternoon. We feel like new parents!!
