Tulips BLOOMED

Date: 04/21/2003

Number: 1

Essentially all (99/100) of the tulip bulbs we planted came up, however we have more than 100 flowers. Many of the bulbs produced two flowers so there are at least 150 blossoms. A mother of one of our students is a botanist by training. Her son told us that they pick off all the stamen from their tulips at home so that the tulips will last longer AND that the stamen grow back so that they keep picking them off. So we tried it. The kids had a lot of fun pulling the stamen off (and decorating themselves with the purple pollen) and indeed the stamen have grown back. We cannot answer whether or not the tulips will last longer because we have not conducted a controlled experiment. We would be interested to know if anyone has tried this and if so what have you found to be the results?
