Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/16/2003

Number: 1

We saw one barn swallow checking out the eves of our house, flying around our entire yard. Other swallows followed within days and re-entered their nests from years before. We currently have 7 nests attached to the limestone walls or resting on top of level areas of large columns under eves in porch area. I would estimate at least 4-6 birds assisting in the building of nests. Other adults who arrived first took over old nests and have already re-feathered the nests and appear to be nesting. We have a 3-acre lake 300 yards from our home and we observe the swallows constantly going from the lake to the house. IT is a joy to watch them dart and fly and even stop mid-wind at the end of each day. Their favorite spot is to sit atop the fans on the porch seven feet from their nests, as if to rest. It is rather comical to watch the young try to learn to fly across the dining room window area..The slightly mistake by a small one if followed by severe scolding by adult sitting in nearby tree. It
