Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/05/2003

Number: 1

We saw 5 monarchs out at recess time. It was pretty warm, around 65 degrees Farenheit. It was partly cloudy with a wind speed of about 14-21 miles an hour. A couple monarchs had tattered wings. We didn't see any milkweed. The wind was coming from the South. They were flying in the trees and the prairie.

7 of our second graders stated that they had seen 5 butterflies
yesterday on the playground and 2 said they saw 1 each today. I showed
them pictures of the monarch and the painted lady and they all said that
they were definitely not painted ladies. Viceroys, as you know, are very
similar, so it was harder to tell, though the kids were fairly certain
that they were not viceroys.
