Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/07/2003

Number: 1

Our hummingbird feeder had been up since May 2, 2003. We observed one hummingbird perched on a locust tree branch on May 7, 2003. Within one hour, a male hummer was observed feeding on our feeder. He was observed at the feeder again later that day. Our habitat consists of a combination of blooming trees, plants and shrubs including, but not limited to, lilacs, coral bells, columbine, four o'clocks, trumpet vines, clematis vines, valerian, apple trees, locust trees, cosmos, peonies and wild roses. We also have an abundance of dead tree branches for perching/feeder watching, as well as a shallow bird bath. This is the sixth season for us in this location. We usually can observe hummingbirds until sometime in October.
