Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/12/2003

Number: 1

We saw three fresh monarchs around our school front as the children were going out for buses this afternoon. At home 18 miles SE, I found 18 or more flying around bridal wreath, forsythia, and vibernum bushes, although none were resting or feeding.

They were definitely monarchs and not painted ladies or viceroys. Two males and three females were closely examined, but caught and released only one that looked like it might have been tagged. That was an older, more ragged
male. It didn't have a tag, rather it looked like a piece of tape. .

Have also observed 27 eggs on milkweed--most of our milkweed is late, but the ones next to our buildings are growing well.
