Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/13/2003

Number: 1

This morning my fourth grade class released 6 adult Monarchs raised from eggs laid in the milkweed patch we planted outside our classroom last fall. We shared about 35 caterpillars with other classes around the school so that other students could watch the amazing transformation from larva to pupa to adult. We only had three caterpillars who died while making their chrysalis. Otherwise, all adults were healthy and flew off happily as we released them. We had 3 males and 3 females in our classroom. Of the caterpillars we left to grow in the wild, several found interesting places to place their chrysalis - one was underneath a park bench right outside our classroom, and another was up on a birdhouse, right next to the entry hole! Still another was under another small wooden bench in the couryard. All of those emerged without harm and are happily flying around now! Ruth Pinson's 4th grade, ARmuchee Elem., Rome, GA
