Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/12/2003

Number: 1

This afternoon, a woman from Cape Cod brought me a monarch her husband had found on the beach on Monday. The well worn female was caked with sand and would have gone out with the tide if it had not been rescued. She seems to be recovering, although is not very active.
This very nice woman was determined to find someone to adopt the butterfly, as she felt it was too cold for the monarch to survive.
An unseasonable 44 degrees this afternoon here in Massachusetts.
Milkweed here on the coast is, at the best spots, 5-6 inches tall. In past years I have seen monarchs this early.
