Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/24/2003

Number: 1

The monarch was a fairly fresh male nectaring at verbena bonariensis in our
back yard about 3:30 p.m. on 5/24/03. It was a hazy sun after raining most
of the morning, little or no wind, upper 70's and humid. There were just a
few small spots on the wings where the scales had been scratched off, but
overall they were in good shape and there were no ragged edges on the wings.
Wing color was bright orange - we do have a good picture if you would like
to see it.

Then on 5/26/03 in the late afternoon a female monarch showed up, and
nectared most of the afternoon at our asclepias seriaca. Unfortunately we
did not observe any egg-laying behavior but you can be sure we will be
checking our milkweed plants very carefully. The afternoon was varying sun
and clouds, once again after morning rain, upper 70's and humid. The female
was also in very good shape, fairly fresh and large, bright orange.
