Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/31/2003

Number: 1

I was out checking the garden and saw some small chew marks in the very small milkweed(8 inches high) which I moved about 2 weeks ago. I was very surprised to find 3 monarch caterpillars. I found a fourth in another patch on another small common milkweed. This is the earliest day I have ever found a caterpillar...My finds are usally in the later part of July. (I brought them in to raise and hopefully to breed and have more caterpillars for my butterfly class in July.) So I guess a few weeks ago a monarch passed thru without me seeing it...
