Believe it was a female, though I only saw it for a few seconds, as I was driving the car. But it was dark like a female, at the edge of a field up the road from my house. I HOPE it found its way down to my milkweed patch, which is between 2-3 feet tall and WAITING for a female to lay her eggs! I'd been looking for monarchs for weeks, and finally saw this one.
