Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/01/2003

Number: 1

I observed three Monarchs in territory where I see them regularly each
year, while biking. One flew by and I quickly noted it. I saw the second
one nectaring and up close it looked quite fresh. The third one flew away
from the second one quickly but it also looked OK. I have seen (and
collected) some very weathered ones from this area in years past, but not
yet this year. I travel this area on bike a few days each week and so I
will keep an eye out for more details. The milkweed is still not in full
bloom yet by this area, so it may not support large numbers yet. We have
has a cooler spring. The day I spotted the Monarch was quite beautiful,
yet only in the 60's for temperature, with a slight NW wind.
