Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/05/2003

Number: 1

Weather has been really cool this year. We had one day last week dropping down to 42 degrees and several other nights dropping down into the 40's. Nurseries were advising not to plant tender plants until after Memorial Day due to the temperatures.

Milkweed in my garden is about 8" tall. I saw some leaves chewed and checked the milkweed out. Found 5 baby monarch caterpillars about a quarter inch long. They are on my 'Ice Ballet' and 'Cinderella' swamp milkweed. None are on my Tuberosa which is the first place I found them last year.
