During regular surveys of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park, which straddles the borders of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland where the Potomac and Shenandoah meet, I saw my first Monarchs for the year -- a pair mating at the Schoolhouse Ridge Battlefield. This particular battlefield is great for Monarch watching. It's large, loaded with milkweed and nectar plants, and mown infrequently.
