Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/07/2003

Number: 1

Today I traveled between Iowa City and Waterloo on
I-380. The Monarchs were very numerous, especially from south of the
Independence exit all the way to Waterloo! I have not seen so many along
the road before. They weren't in "packs" but were scattered out along the
way. I think about 5 or 6 ended up smashed on my windshield. I thought if
every car going north today killed at least 5 Monarchs, that would be a LOT
of Monarchs wiped out in Iowa, and they have a long way to go yet! I live
south of Iowa City, so am anxious to get out tomorrow and see if the main
migration is coming through here yet. We had a few flying through our
playgroung at school this past week. We will be releasing four sometime
this week, too - as soon as they emerge from their chrysalis'. Two years
ago, we had hundreds in our trees. That was a sight!
