Hundreds of monarchs appeared in the meadow and along the shoal drinking nectar from the goldenrod and asters. Each plant was host to 4 or 5 butterflies. They had crossed the 5 mile stretch of water from the Upper Pennisula (Route 2) to St. Helena Island. Several days later, when the wind was right, most of the monarchs took flight and crossed the remaining stretch of water to the Lower Pennisula of Michigan.
