Hundreds of monarchs,(but not as many as sighted at St. Helena Island), were feeding on tall purple flowers in the gardens of the Grand Hotel. The Grand Hotel sits on the ancient beach ridge overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the Lower Penninsula of Michigan further to the south. The butterflies probably flew across the water from St.Ignace, Michigan and were stopping for lunch before finishing the crossing of the Straits.
