After checking roosts daily in the morning, I've decided the really big groups of monarchs are past this area. The most I find in the morning are 5. They don't roost together, choosing totally different trees in the catalpa grove. Is it for safety or independence, I can't decide. These single monarchs are much more skittish & sensitive to sounds, startling easily. Perhaps that also is a protective device, they seem much more aware of what's happening around them. The larger groups (100-150) paid no attention to my passing or sounds of the golf cart or 4 wheeler.
