Tonight about an hour before sundown I was boating near the Eastern shoreline of
Lake Michigan just south of St. Joseph, Michigan. There were hundreds of Monarch butterflies headed south. My wife and I observed them for over a half hour. They were flying I would say 75 to 200 feet up. Wind was very light out of the North and the butterflies were all headed due south.
I have lived in Michigan for over 20 years and boated on Lake Michigan the same amount of time but I have never seen this many butterflies at once ? it was fantastic.
I'm an avid nature lover and watcher. I help track the hummingbird migration
each spring, have created a butterfly garden and have our wooded city acre
lot registered as a backyard wildlife habitat.
