The wildflower garden at Shattuck Middle School was designed and planted in 1997 by the 7th grade science students. Today the native wildflower garden has grown to cover over 1,800 square feet. It is abundant with Monarch nectaring plants such as purple coneflower, meadow blazingstar, and New England aster. In late August, September, and October the Monarchs can be witnessed by the hundreds. The middle school students frequently observe and report their sightings during this time along with tagging as many Monarchs as possible during their journey South.
