Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/04/2003

Number: 1

As of September 11th, the peak of monarch migration has now passed Kingston and area.

Prior to September 4, the number of monarchs passing through the area steadily increased.

On the afternoon of the 4th, the local population maximum was reached when I counted about 200 monarchs in about 2 hours(12.30 PM-2:30 PM) in one meadow, most of them feeding on red clover flowers.

There was a steady northwest wind of about 20 km/h which made it favourable for them to take a run at crossing Lake Ontario, but I am not sure if they did. On the 5th, the number of monarchs in the same 2 hour period in the same meadow was down about 50%. On Monday, the 8th, I counted about 25 monarchs and that number diminshed to only 2 monarchs on the afternoon of the 11th of September.
