Oh, boy, what fun!!! A wonderful migration wave just went through Kansas City MO this afternoon.
In 2 hours I counted 227 Monarchs. A good North wind behind them, so many were up above the pin oaks (over 60 feet), some I saw in binoculars. Temp in lower 70's. Most were flying high.
My count and times, notice that in 30 minutes from 3:20 pm (CDT) to 3:50 the number was much higher, that was a definite a good wave:
2:20 to 3:20 pm - 83 Monarchs
3:20 to 3:50 pm - 85 Monarchs
3:50 to 4:15 pm - 59 Monarchs
for a total of 227 observed in my location north of Kansas City, MO (I'm next to Gladstone).
Can't wait to see the next wave. Does anyone know how far they can travel in a day? The wind speed was at least 10-15 or more during the migration I observed. Also, I haven't seen any more, it just stopped at 4:20 pm.
