Monarch PEAK Migration

I attended the K-State football game, which started at noon. I was in the
nosebleed section -- far, far above the playing field and fairly far above
the surrounding ground level (the playing field is dug into the earth).
Soon I noticed Monarchs floating by, at my eye level. There was a bit of a
wind from the north and so it was an easy ride for the butterflies.

I soon began looking up, with my binoculars. For the next two hours there
was a rather steady stream of butterflies, many of them quite high (totally
invisible to the naked eye), taking advantage of the stronger winds up
there. It was not uncommon for me to have 10 Monarchs in my binoculars'
field of vision at any moment.

Then, about 2 o'clock it all ended. Suddenly, I could find no Monarchs,
either at eye level or in the sky. In fact I recall seeing only one
straggler for the rest of the game (until 3:30 or so). But for the first
two hours what was going in the sky was at least as interesting as what was
