I am a teacher at Pittman Elementary in Harvey, Louisiana. In Spring of 2002 I began a butterfly gardening project at school. The project's focus was to create a habitat for butterflies and establish it as an outdoor learning environment where students could engage in active learning activities centered around butterfly gardening. The project has been very successful. Last spring, students raised and released Monarch and Cloudless Sulphur butterflies. The school's teachers do cross curriculum activities. Enthusiasm continues to grow among students, teachers, and parents. A PowerPoint slide show featuring this project can be viewed at our school's web site at http://pittman.jppss.k12.la.us.
