Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/20/2003

Number: 1

I took a group of parents and children, ages 3, 4, and 5, out for a walk during a program I did called "Migrating Monarch". There were 9 children and 10 adults in the group. We were in the prairie trail at Mary Kay Oxley Nature Center in Tulsa, OK for about 30 minutes. We saw 27 Monarchs. Some were flying over and some were nectering on Thistles and other wildflowers (one of the children said the Monarchs were getting the necterines from the flowers). The children were dressed in Monarch headbands and were flying paper Monarchs that they had colored and glued on popcicle sticks for use as puppets. We were together for one and a half hours. We had a story and discussed the Monarchs life cycle and their migration habits. Then, we colored the puppets and made the headbands. Then, we headed outside to take our survey. We saw many beautiful butterflies (9 species). It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time.
