October 2
Observed approximately 400 Monarchs pass through our yard over a 1 hour period just prior to sunset. We are located in a rural area on top of a ridge approximately 50 miles north of downtown Dallas. Most of the Monarchs were flying south, some were flying north and south looking for a roosting tree. The temperature was in the mid to low 70s and there was a light north/northeast wind. We have various tree types - ash, pecan, poplar, oak and are lightly wooded with lots of pasture land. Very exciting to watch them fly through and around the trees to carefully search for just the right tree to roost in. A small group of approximately 20 landed in our yard for the night.
