Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2003

Number: 1

On Oct. 2 our first grade students at the Episcopal School of Dallas in Dallas, Texas observed hundreds of monarch butterflies flying south over our playground. The temperature was in the high 70's, the wind light from the north, and the sky partly cloudy. The monarchs appreared exceptionally large. They were flying approximately 20 to 100 feet from the ground in a southerly direction. We raise monarch butterflies in our classroom, then tag and release them to join the fall migration. The children were thrilled to see such a spectacular sight.
