Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/06/2003

Number: 1

The monarchs have really been pouring through southwest Arkansas. We don't usually have large number of them, but this year they are here by the hundreds. They were especially abundant at Grandview Prairie in Hempstead County. We were there from about 3:30 through 5:30 P.M. on Saturday, Oct. 4. We were able to tag 50 monarchs without moving our car. We also tagged another 25 before we left. We counted well over 300 monarchs. The ones that were flying were headed in a west to southwest direction. The ones that were feeding were mostly on Scaly Blazing Star. In fact all of the ones we caught to tag, except two were feeding on these flowers.
