Visited an event at the the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge today celebrating the 100th birthday of National Wildlife Refuges. From 1:00-2:00 just observed a queen, tawny emperor, numerous sulphurs, but starting at 2:15 we began seeing monarchs dropping down out of the clouds. We counted 50 every two minutes for the next half hour. They continued to move overhead. It was very overcast, temperature in the low 70's, wind 0-5 miles an hour. Then the wind became breezy and the rain began to fall. The monarchs started heading into the large oak trees and began roosting high overhead.
