Over the last several years, the District has developed a Native Plants garden (including milkweed) in the yard adjacent to our visitor center. Our botanist and volunteers utilize the garden as a source of native seed for National Forest management projects such as site restoration. Our visitor services personnel use the site as a teaching tool. In addition to interpretive signs explaining the many virtues of native plants, we offer visitor programs about native plants and butterflies. We also collect some of the Monarch caterpillars, bring them into the visitor center and allow visitors to observe the transformation up close. Children and adults alike enjoy releasing the butterflies back out.
