Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/18/2003

Number: 1

In the years I have observed monarch migrations in Florida, although I had heard of them, I have never witnessed the group behavior common to the migrating butterflies elsewhere. The monarchs are present, but more dispersed, arriving in small groups or singly. Charlotte Petersen sent me photos taken in Vero Beach, on the east coast of Florida 2/3 down state of a migratory, I assume, roost of butterflies. I have attached one photo and her husband checked the sun angle, lat. and long. for the record.

After walking out into my front yard (in Vero Beach) I discovered hundreds of Monarch butterflies on my tree a few days ago. The numbers seem to be doubling daily. I snapped this picture and discovered your site so that I could find out more about them. Are they just stopping off at my tree on their way to Mexico?
