Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/23/2003

Number: 1

Have been so busy lately, I haven't really had time to study my butterfly garden. Imagine my surprise when I was out there yesterday, 10/23/03, and found a huge fat Monarch caterpillar. My excitement rose, I hunted around and found 10 caterpillars at all different stages. I even found a crysalis, and there's probably more, I'll have to really look through the plant life. The main cause of my excitement is, that normally I have to move any caterpillars I find to my "moveable" milkweed inside so that the wasps don't get them all. The fact that I found so many large ones is a sign the wasps are disappearing, and, the migrating Monarch's are laying eggs fast and furious as they migrate south. We have had very mild weather for the past month, very few cool days. Perfect breeding weather. Way to go ladies!
