Last weekend we released a late batch of orphaned gray squirrels that came into the Minnesota Wildlife Haven (www.mnwildlifehaven.org) this summer. Minnesota gray squirrels have two nesting seasons – early spring and mid-summer. The six squirrels released are approximately 14 weeks old – they came to the Haven when they were about 2 weeks old and still had their eyes closed! They were feed a special formula until they ate on their own. Before release they were fed foods they would find around their release site, they learned to live in a nesting box (so they wouldn’t have to try to find a cavity nest to protect them from weather and predators right away,) and they went into outdoor caging to acclimate to late autumn temperatures, outdoor sounds and foraging for food.
