My son and I observed a monarch butterfly as it flew across our car windshield as we sat in line at a Wendy's fast food restaurant drive-thru. The monarch appeared to be a newly eclosed butterfly - bright coloration and large in size. We are yearly participants in the Monarch Watch tagging program and tagged 50 monarchs this year, ending with the final butterfly tagged on 9/30/03. In previous years, I have tagged up through the first two weeks of October, but never recall seeing monarchs this late in the season. The day was a record-breaking 78 degrees.
