Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 12/11/2003

Number: 1

We have some monarch larva that have hatched out and are in various stages of growth. One has already formed a chrysalis. One is spinning its little silk pad to attach to and the other one is still munching away. We took cuttings from some tropical milkweed we have in our outdoor classroom to root to plant next spring. They are sitting in a sunny, south facing window. One day a student from that room came in and asked if we had put the caterpillars there. We went to look and sure enough there were three monarch larvae eating away. We took the cuttings the week of Thanksgiving - before our first hard freeze of the year. The plants had been washed several times to remove aphids, but the eggs must have remained in tact. Everyone is eagerly watching to see what will happen with our "Christmas miracles".
