We have 12 acres near Lake Michigan, 10 of which are wooded. We are presently clearing out some underbrush that is detrimental to the Beech/Maple/Oak forest growth because it will allow more moisture to be taken up by our mature trees and their saplings. We are also trying to encourage more species of birds. We leave fallen trees and other shrubs such as viburnums to act as refuge for the animals. We've placed many feeders near enough to the house and will be planting more ornamental trees such as Dogwoods and also some conifers for the birds' protection.
This summer we will also continue raising Monarchs from the caterpillars we attract on our asclepias (a milkweed). Last summer (03) we had 18.
